December 2003

Dear Family and Friends,

We hope this note finds you healthy and happy this holiday season.  Even though this year seems to have flown by, it has been quite eventful for us.

Ed is currently in his second year of his Endocrinology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.  The first year provided clinical experience in all areas of hormone disorders.  The second and third years offer the opportunity for focused research.  Right now, he is doing clinical research in diabetes, mainly with severe forms of insulin resistance.  It is a wonderful experience to be able to treat disorders that most people only get to read about.  He still isn’t sure what he’ll be doing after the fellowship.  Perhaps by next Christmas letter. . . .

Gina is still working hard at the Internal Medicine clinic in Silver Spring and at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park.  Being a primary care physician continues to be a rewarding experience for her.  She enjoys meeting new people and building friendships with those in the community.  In her spare time, she makes scrapbooks of various trips and experiences.

Speaking of which, this autumn we had the pleasure of visiting Niagara Falls for the first time.  We found that there were an infinite number of ways to view and experience the magnificent falls.  We stopped short of actually going over the falls, unlike the latest daredevil (failed suicide) the very next weekend.  While there, we also visited one of Canada’s beautiful botanical gardens.  The experience was wonderful, and we highly recommend it.

In May, Ed’s parents, George and Shirley, visited us during a coincidental annual meeting in Washington, DC.  It was great to spend time with them and show them around town.  We have been blessed to see so many familiar faces in the short time we have been here.

Last spring, Gina visited Pasco, WA to see her brother Ron graduate from Walla Walla College with a major in Theology.  It was nice to get away from the stress of work and visit with her family.  Later in the summer, her mother and sister, Betty and Jeanine, returned the favor and spent time with us while Jeanine was seen at the National Institutes of Health to evaluate her progressive tremors.  The NIH agreed with her presumptive diagnosis of spinocerebellar ataxia, but so far has been unable to provide additional diagnoses or treatment.

Sadly, Ed’s Grandmother, Edna Silcox, passed away in October after a brief illness.  She was a wonderful person, and we will miss her.  Ed was able to attend her funeral in New Leipzig, ND and spend precious time with the family.

With snipers, snow storms, and hurricane Isabel behind us, we wonder what next year will bring.  We hope to hear how you’re doing as well.  May God bless you and give you a wonderful holiday season and a prosperous year ahead.

Love,
Ed & Gina
